CHAPTER 40

ASHLEY

Bryce ran inside and told me what had happened. He put a white box on the kitchen table. “Get to your ATV.”

We zoomed toward Sheep Horn Hill, talking to each other through our headsets. “Why didn’t you call 911?” I said. “Or check with their parents?”

“I knocked on their door. No answer. I’m not sure if this is real or not. Could be a trap. I want to make sure before we get anyone else involved.”

We slowed as we came to the bottom of the hill. This was a remote area where lots of motorcycle and BMX bikers hung out, so we didn’t want to go flying up the hill and hit one of them.

Bryce and I parked, took off our helmets, and started up the hill. As soon as we rounded the first bend, I heard someone whimper. The road doubled back in what looked like the end of the sheep’s horn, the steep bank taller than our heads and tree roots reaching out like gray fingers. The farther we walked, the darker it got, though it was daylight.

When we turned the corner, I noticed several places where cars had spun into the embankment. Any kid riding down this road full tilt could reach such a terrific speed there was no way they could make the corner. In fact, I’d heard of one kid who’d gone airborne over the bank and landed in the branches above us.

At the top of the hill we spotted a group bending over someone. The middle daredevil’s bike lay 20 yards away, the front rim bent at an ugly angle. The rider lay tangled in barbed wire. None of the three was wearing a helmet. When I saw the kid’s right leg, I gasped. Blood covered his ankle and shoe. His arms and hands were scraped, and a bruise already colored his chin. Tears ran down his dirty cheek.

Another person had joined the daredevils. He was bigger, with long, gangly arms. He stood when he saw us coming.

Boo Heckler.
